Event Description

After almost 10 years Adelaide’s very own NovaCaine have reformed & are ready to unleash themselves on the live circuit. During their time apart the line up kept busy on numerous solo & collaboration projects including Couldrum, The Inflatable Scooterz & Coil. The band would also like to promote the inclusion of Pete Gore joining the guys on drums to give new blood & innovation to a classic sound. See NovaCaine at various venues including the 12th December @ Enigma Bar (for the loving tongue - cd launch) along with shows on the 7th (happy sometimes & squid jag), and 28th November (underbelly & brail) at the Joiners Arms. Hope 2 see you there!!

Puff 'n' Stuff

The festival announcements keep coming, with the fourth Golden Plains taking place at Meredith’s Supernatural Amphitheatre from Fri 5 to Sun 7 March. With capacity a bit smaller than the Meredith Music Festival, tickets will once again be at a premium with a line-up includes the reformed Pavement, Dinosaur Jr, Dirty Projectors, The Big Pink, Jeffrey Lewis & The Junkyard, The Cruel Sea, Calexico, Wooden Shjips and that old favourite, plenty more.

WOMADelaide is on that same weekend, going for an extra day with the addition of Mon 8 March to the Botanic Park festival, and they’ve just announced two more acts, with the dub meets ethiojazz sounds of Dub Colossus and Melbourne’s twenty piece Public Opinion Afro Orchestra joining the likes of Ravi Shankar, Calexico, Eliades Ochoa, Dean & Britta, Ojos De Brujo, Nortec Collective and The Skatalites

With all the New Year’s festivals sold out, you’re chances of seeing the bands featured on them are growing ever slimmer. Just a week after New Year’s, Southbound is almost sold out, with Sunday and VIP tickets gone completely, but there are still a few multi-day passes left, and these represent the only chance to see the likes of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Moby, Rodrigo Y Gabriela, Jamie T. Emiliana Torrini, King Khan & The Shrines, The Phenomenal Handclap Band, Grizzly Bear, Patrick Watson, Seasick Steve, DJ Yoda, Future Of The Left, Datarock, White Rabbits and the hordes of other bands playing in Busselton (WA) from Fri 8 to Sun 10 Jan.

And of course, there’s the second round announcement of the Big Day Out. Dancehall mainstay Beenie Man has already been removed from the bill following controversy over the misogynist and homophobic content of his early material, but the sold out show at the Wayville Showgrounds on Fri 29 Jan will still play host to freakfolk icon Devendra Banhart, DJ Sasha, “the new MGMT” Passion Pit, Simian Mobile Disco, Hilltop Hoods, Jet, Decoder Ring, Itch-E & Scratch-E and the return of the Silent Disco, amongst many other attractions. Of course, if you haven’t got a ticket already, the only way to get in on the action is to join the ticket ballot, or enter the dB BDO cover art competition.

What’s this cover art competition, you ask? Well the first edition of next year will feature cover art designed by one lucky dB reader, who will win the aforementioned pack with a double VIP pass and a whole swag of CDs from artists playing at the festival. If you think you’ve got what it takes, send you’re best BDO 2010 themed artwork to 179a Hindley Street or bring it up yourself, or you can e-mail it to alexis@dbmagazine.com.au.

After a decade in hibernation, funk, soul and hip-hop fusers Skunkhour are up to their necks in touring gear, travelling all around the country for a reformation celebration that touches down at The Gov on Fri 11 Dec.

Another in the spate of comeback shows, local metal types Guantanamo Bay City Rollers are playing at Enigma on Sat 19 Dec with Prison Bitch, Patriarchal Death Machine and Shit Magnet.

The boys from NovaCaine had so much fun with their own reunion shows that they’ll continue with the madness at the Joiners Arms on Sat 28 Nov with special guests Underbelly and Brail. You can also catch them returning to the stage to support long time friends The Loving Tongue at Enigma on December 12th when The Tongue’s new CD is launched.

At the other end of the spectrum, Mammal have broken up and cancelled all future touring plans. In their explanation, they’ve been refreshingly honest, explaining that it’s “due to long standing personal, political, musical and business differences.” Frontman Ezekiel Ox will release his own solo debut in early 2010.

Somewhere in the middle, Bodyjar are on their last lap of the nation, having announced their imminent break-up. Most of the shows have sold out, and as hinted in last edition, Adelaide now has an extra show, happening on Thurs 3 Dec at Enigma Bar. Support will
