Music from the 80s era had so much passion, balls if you will unlike todays music. There are a bunch of wannabes puttin out music that doesn't even come close to greatness. They can't touch acts like GNR, Motley Crue to name a few. Don't get me wrong some of them really try and are decent but the fire is missing. . . . .
I'm actually glad this topic was posted, I think it's definitely something to discuss and everyone's going to have a different take on it. I've been listening to (and playing) 80's style rock/metal since the 80's and while it does seem to have gone underground like it was before the big boom in the late 80's that's not necessarily a bad thing. When there's less media attention, musicians have a little time to develop creatively without having to cater to the whim of the public and/or the labels/media outlets.
I can say from my own personal standpoint when I write a new tune, or step out on stage, I give it every bit as much passion as I did back in the day. I give it everything I've got and I don't know any other way to do it. It's hard to compete with people's memories and favorites going back years. In many cases that stuff is so ingrained nothing can ever top it, thus why every generation says their music is best. It's not just the music, but the good times/bad times that accompanied it, the things that make you who you are. How can a new tune compete with that? It's tough, I know I also tend to keep listening to the older stuff I grew up with, it's what speaks to me.
That being said, maybe you hate my band (or just hate reading my stupid posts), but there's a lot of good stuff out there being played by people who write what they write and play what they play from the heart. I don't think it's fair to say that nobody plays with any fire anymore, I think there are plenty of people playing with fire, you've just got to decide for yourself if you're ready to get burned...
Yeah that was pretty cheesy, even for me... but that's how I feel. :-)

Since Ive got 2 little girls the only music allowed in my house is Jonas Brothers and Hannah Montana/Miley Cirrus. YUCK!! Dont get me wrong I like ONE song by Jonas brothers (ok two lol) but they are such bubblegum, screaming 12 yr old girls wanna be's. lol
My oldest likes My Chemical Romance, Lamb of God, GNR (imagine THAT lol) and other groups along that nature. They arent bad they are just different.
Remember when MTV was about music and not reality shows? Remember that one hr on Saturday nights that they dedicated to Metal. I think it was called Headbangers Ball.
I cant watch the crap they have on MTV or VH1 (unless they do the 80's show).
But I also remember my mom and dad calling my music crap and "nothing but loud screaming" lol

wow! awesome points! i am so glad someone had the balls to post this topic i was going to' i was seriously thinking about it,but it looks like you beat me to it tiffany, so my hat off to you for having the guts to start this thread!
most people avoid confronting this topic because we are too afraid of offending some one our stepping on someones toes concerning this topic!
but i truly believe the only hope for the future of hard rock and metal in general making such a big comeback that it becomes bigger that it ever was 20 or 30 years ago,is that we openly discuss it and in thus doing, keep it's spirit alive and well untill it does eventually physically come back to life!
the only problem is i dont know if i will still be alive when it does, but i sure hope that it happens sooner than i think and that i do live long enough to see it!
then i can truly go to my grave a happy metalhead! lol
i would agree to a certain point... if you mean that bigger bands today aren't as passionate you are right... but you'll find some passionate bands on a local scale
i totaly know what your talking about, most of these bands today don't even know what a lead guitar break is, although some bands are starting to do them.
I know all too well what ur sayin. Their songs just run on there is no break in the songs where the lead guitarist can just wail. I miss those guitar riffs. . .
Yes, some of the bigger, better known bands lack raw passion in their music. However, not all of them are that way. The local bands, unsigned etc. now thats where the future of rock music is.
Maybe so. But the problem is MTV won't play any of those great local, unsigned, small label bands. If they did we wouldn't be having this conversation.
