On the heels of the news that Metal Church is gonna call it quits, I thought I'd give them some love with the AOTW. I'm not gonna lie and say I was a super huge Metal Church fan, but I certainly liked some of their tunes. Let's take a closer look at the 1984 self titled debut.
Metal Church as known for their great songwriting, crunching hooks, and rabid loyal fan base. They hailed from the great state of Washington, and their live shows in that region became legendary. In 1984 they released their debut full length studio album, and it was immediately met with critical success. The album contained Beyond The Black (one of my favorites from them), a self titled track, and a cover of Deep Purple's Highway Star. This is unconfirmed, but I think this cover of Highway Star marks the 4 billionth time this song has been covered.
The album wasn't the success that some of the subsequent Metal Church records were, but it remains my second favorite behind The Dark. Check out a little Metal Church today...it's our Album O' The Week!
i loved metal church! i practically wore this CASSETTE out. haha. beyond the black is awesome and merciless onslaught is on my player now. it gets you pumped. this Rocklahoma show gets better every day. well, they got Rocklahoma and i got the beach.
The original singer, the late David Wayne, was the best singer metal church ever had, then there was a replacement singer and the music changed direction for the worst, in my opinion. I saw the original metal church with David Wayne when they opened up for Metallica on the Master of Puppets tour at the Capitol Theatre in Passaic, N.J. I believe cliff burton died shortly before that. They both rocked that night. May their souls rest in peace in Rock and Roll Heaven.
