Where 80's Metal Fans Connect

my 2 alltime favorite metal genres have always been 1.NWOBHM and 2.THRASH and in that order with other gneres like death and black following behind!
now the thing is some people dont think of the new wave of british heavy metal to be an actual metal genre but more of a movement, which i wont argue but if you really look into it you will find that it is technically considered a heavy metal genre!
nwobhm was the genre that got me into metal back in the early 1980's with bands like my alltime favorite iron maiden, motorhead and judas priest!
but the thing that i have always found the most interesting about nwobhm is all the lesser known british metal bands that were around during the same time that pretty much fell thru the cracks, bands like saxon, diamond head, tank, cloven hoof satan, girschool, venom and etc,
i could go on and on and on with the number of bands that were apart of that early movement of british metal which is one of the many reasons why i personally think it is the greatest style of heavy metal that ever was or ever will be.
for one thing when you look deep enough into nwobhm you will find that alot of those early bands had a huge influence on other genres of metal that would come later!
anyway i started this topic because i want to get a general idea of where mfa is with this legendary genre of metal so your thoughts and insights on this would be greatly apreciated!
thank you and up the irons!!!!!

lozza, lozza, lozza.....where do i start...NWOBHM..or newobbem as Bruce Dickinson calls it...is rightly valid...i'll give an example...WAYYYY back in 80 whatever in sydney there was a metal importer called Utopia and guess what 90% of his stock was...thats right..NWOBHM...I spent time, coin and braincells in that joint listening too...SAXON, VENOM ( conrad was taking the piss right?) GIRLSCHOOL ( r.i.p KJ) IRON MAIDEN, SAMSON, ANGELWITCH, WRATHCHILD, TIGERTAILZ..SPIDER, maybe DEF LEP although Joe Elliot refuses to be lumped in with the rest...AHHH memories

exactly dave, and also,i dont know how it was in australia at that time but in the states alot of headbangers had to rely on tape trading and heavy metal magazines like kerrang's mail order sections to get a hold of alot of those early nwobhm bands albums!

I was lucky we had a small independent store called Blue Meannie after the Beatles the owner was a
HUGE Beatles fan and the first time I went into the store they had Number of the Beast 7" on red vinyl
I didn't have the money that night but got it next time out. They used to sell Kerrang, Metal Forces Metal Hammer had all the killer imports got all my Maiden 7" Saxon stuff there.

Very sad after going off and on for 25 years they closed last September hasn't been the same since.
Now I have to go to Hollywood to a Huge store called Amoeba Records great store just not the Meannie!

Back in the early 80's there was a little music store called "TAPE WORLD" in Salisbury Maryland that I used to buy all of the hard to find records, tapes, mags, patches, ect at..It was actually an african american owned store with disco stuff, incense, motown 45s,ect but had a very small section of Heavy metal records of unknown bands on the Noise,Combat,Metal Blade,Neat and Roadrunner labels..Too bad it closed down back in 2000 because it was cool and the owners were pretty hip..Now I go to Skinnies records in Norfolk,Va to get my hard to find stuff..I would have liked to have gone to the "Meanie" cause I love shops like this

the record store where I worked was the only one in the area where you could find such musical treasures. no one else wanted to stock that music but us, the owner ate that up and ordered insane amounts of imports-totally crazy ! I would bring my Kerrang mags into work and give him addys of places he could buy from overseas. once I got involved with the tape trading, I'd bring those in for a listen or three. He was a cool dude, also a huge Beatles fan. I hated like hell to see him close, there will never be another record store like that again-unless I open one ;-)

I would love to open my own shop like that ! maybe that's what I will do when I retire ;-) ya know like the old hippies had organic restraunts, I'll be an old metalhead with a kick-ass record & tape store . I will introduce future genterations to Saxon,Diamond Head, and so on....

NWOBHM is one of the best things that happened to rock/metal. Screaming vocales, searing guitars & machine gun drums, metal broke away from blues & became one of the best sub genres in rock music. Motorhead, Diamondhead, Saxon, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Sweet savage all defined the genre. One of the distinctive feature was the neo clasical influence which resulted in virtuoso playing & awesome vocal ranges. NWOBHM is my favorite genre.

We can count Venom in the NWOBHM, but Venom is more into thrash/black metal, if at all we separate thrash/black from heavy metal.

I agree with Joe Elliot that Leppard is not NWOBHM, cause I think they are more hard rock than metal. So I would call them new wave of British hard rock haha.
