Calling nayone who is in or has been in a band.

I really want to start my own band.. I have wanted to for years now.... I feel like I have to do it soon..

Thing is.. I've never really sang in front of anyone so that's obviously an issue, also I'm actually very shy.
I dunno how to start I mean, I have kind of talked to my cousin about him being the bassist and he said yeah but we haven't talked about it seriously. I have the look down lmao and thats about it. I have partially written songs also.. I try to develop my voice just at home.. and my moves lol...

Is there any tips you can give me.... Any tips about building confidence, song writing...basically any advice would be much appreciated. :D.

I gather you want to be a singer!
My advice is go find anyplace you can sing and do it. Kareoke is great practice. People think it's bull, but it is good practice. You get used to hearing your own voice, and singing in front of people. And you have the words in front of you, you don't have to really learn the song.
At band practice, I have the words written in front of me, so it's the same thing. And when we record, many times the band has recorded the music already, so I am singing to a track anyway!
Also, record yourself and listen for how to improve. The recorder is a cruel teacher, and she don't lie.
MOst importantly, if you want to do it, don't quit! Looks and moves are bottom of the list.

BACKED! I'm musically challenged myself but I do know a few things about the music industry & Musicians, as well as some of the 'short cuts' some take.

As much as I detest Kareoke...LL is right while trying to build your confidence levels up. If you're of age...a shot of tequila always helps too.;o)

It will be a little more difficult with you being in another country but we'll try to help you as well, especially on the 'business' end and how to promote yourself as much as I can. I'll send u an email tomorrow & we can start from there.

And just as loyd said 'NEVER GIVE UP!'If u need a pep talk there's always someone around here to give it to you Jess.

I just noticed after all this time you weren't on my friends list so I sent u a request. It won't happen overnight but the more you are out there practicing the more comfortable you will become singing in front of people.. I promise :o)

I agree with LL...great advice...sing anywhere and anytime you can..at home, in the shower, in the car...karaoke.
Sing along with your favorite songs...try to pick up the harmonies in the background and follow along...Bon Jovi is great for this...Ritchie's voice stands out so well in most songs its quite easy to follow. (that's how I learned harmony!!)
And again..I agree with LL...if you want it, go out and get it!!!

Good Luck!!!!!!!!!

well when singing to a crowd pick one person in the crowd and sing the song to them..that relieves the pressure of the crowd as for song writing think of a moment in ur life in which u felt a certain emotion...anger, love, hate, sadness ...whatever, and then relive that moment put yourself in that moment let it overcome u cry if u have to get as into it as u possibly can.

I'm not a Rockstar but I play one in my head! I do have some songwriting tips though

Keep several notebooks availible to write down not just lyrics, but thoughts, phrases, jokes, dreams, or even just words that move you or you think are interesting. It is so easy to forget things, and you never know when something might fit what you need. It's also easier than trying to orginize lots of scraps of paper later on.

Never be afraid to change something you have written, or even rip it apart! Sometimes the song you end up with is totally different than the song you started.

Get a dictionary, a rhyming dictionary and a thesaurus (cheaper at a used bookstore or flea market), you may not use them often, but they will be invaluable.

Check out your local library for books about songwriting, starting a band, music legal issues
and more, also look into starting a publishing company to protect your songs, it's not hard for anyone to do and is important.

As you progress, look for musician and songwriting groups, clubs and societies in your area, many have clinics, seminars and information, and can be a good place to network.

Rock on! :)

double backed! Very good advice Herb gave you, especially about the legal end of it.

You will need to find the 'ENTERTAINMENT' legal law books. They may be different over where you are but you still should be able to find them in your library.

I'll send you a way to 'copywrite your songs without spending alot of money...The 'poor musicians' patent, lol

Thanks I really appreciate your advice and help.

And to Herb... Yeah I have used a thesaurus and rhyming dictionary before, my problem is writing good choruses and finishing songs also.. I reckon I've probably maybe written about ten but only a few are actually finished. But yeah That's great advice aout taking a notebook where ever I go.

I am in a band, and my worries are doubled 'cos i am the primary songwriter, the bassist, the band founder and leader, the vocalist. So when i write songs, i usually listen to some other songs already written to get inspiration. About the audience it's very simple: just stare at 2-3 dots at the stage or at the wall or look at the far end of the audience. But many use the trick to imagine that there is no audience, this is just a pumpkin field. Hope you will have success with your band!

I'm in a band currently, and whats been said already is what I do, I keep a notebook full of lyrics, and I'm always writing lyrics. And even tho I'm a guitarist I do sing often, so sing wherever you go, whatever song you want I do that all the time it helps with confidence, and gets you even more pumped when you're actually playing live.

Hopefully i helped ya
