Where 80's Metal Fans Connect

And we'll go with these two mainly for the guitar work found in the two, as well as the sword and sorcery makeup that dominates most of the songwriting. Malmsteen is a guitarist who stood on his own and rotated guitarists in and out. Dio was a songwriter who stood on his own and rotated lead singers in and out. Let's take a look at one from each.

You Don't Remember, I'll Never Forget is likely my favorite song by Yngwie...and I like a few. Never liked the man, but his guitar work spoke for itself, and it spoke volumes. The songs I did like from Yngwie were SONGS..not 20 minute rambling guitar solos, and this one was possibly the most prime example (Heaven Tonight comes to mind as well) of Yngwie writing and performing a solo based in a song versus the other way around.

DIO was great at writing the songs, but he of course needed a little help with the solos. You couldn't find better help than Vivian Campbell. We Rock is an uptembo DIO number that featured an unbelievable solo performed by Mr. Campbell. It remains one of my favorite DIO songs, and I like more than a few from him as well.

We Rock vs. You Don't Remember, I'll Never Forget. Both were good songs. Both had guitar solos of note. Which Song Rocked Harder?

I tried to find a good live version of We Rock--I had one long ago where Campbell just went absofuckinglutely bannanas during the solo--but I'll be damned if I could find a good one. Sorry you just have the still picture while you check this one out, but it's the best I could find.

No problem. I remember that I used to have a VHS tape of lots of Headbanger's Ball videos and there was a special on DIO once and they had We Rock live...and while Vivian was shredding, a giant mechanical spider came down from the ceiling. It was so 80s -- and so DIO. It was fantastic. I was hoping to find that one, but got this one instead.

One is about some chick that Yngwie probably pissed off by being such a prick, more than likely his own mother.

The other is about how hard we -- as in Dio, as well as "we" the amateur singers and Dio followers -- proceed to rock as a way of life. What we do, and pretty much the only thing "we" do, is rock.

The Dio tune wins because it is the definition of rocking harder.

If you had used any of the Dio songs about rainbows, nymphs, shapeshifters, basilisks, chimeras, griffins, hydras, minotaurs and/or sphinxes -- the outcome may have different in my mind.
