Helix are a Canadian heavy metal band that formed in 1974 and are best known for their 1984 single "Rock You". The original lineup consisted of lead vocalist Brian Vollmer, guitarists Brent "Doctor" Doerner and Paul Hackman, bassist Keith "Bert" Zurbrigg, and drummer Brian Doerner. This lineup has changed significantly since the band's inception, with Vollmer being the sole constant member.
Early years
Helix were formed in 1974 for a Battle of the Bands contest in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada, originally consisting of lead vocalist Brian Vollmer, guitarists Brent "Doctor" Doerner and Paul Hackman, bassist Keith "Bert" Zurbrigg, and drummer Brian Doerner. Helix released two independent albums, entitled Breaking Loose (Breakin' Loose) and White Lace & Black Leather, in 1979 and 1981 respectively.
Commercial success
They then signed to Capitol Records, and in 1983 released No Rest for the Wicked. This album was virtually a Canadian hit. Then came the 1984 release of Walkin' the Razor's Edge, with the addition of Greg Fritz Hinz and Daryl Gray to the classic 80's lineup, which sold over 100,000 copies in Canada, and over 400,000 internationally. The band's video for the song "Gimme Gimme Good Lovin'" caused a bit of a stir several years after it's initial release in 1984, when it was learned that among the cast of porn stars who appear nude in the uncensored version, was (then) 16-year-old Traci Lords. This album was also a major very popular. Then came the 1985 release of Long Way to Heaven.
You know it Mountain biker....Vagabond Bones rocks....spread the word.
I first met Helix in 1976 in Trenton, Ont. at the local rock bar Sherwood Forest Inn (aka the Quinte and fka Pandora's Box) ...what a unique place it was and Helix fit in perfect !! Their wild and crazy stage antics whipped the booze & drug induced crowds into a rock n roll frenzy. We were so lucky back then to see bands of this caliber for the entire week ! Ya, back then bands stopped into towns to rock us for the entire week....Monday to Saturday with a bonus matinee show on Saturday afternoon....too cool! We diehard rockers would see 7 Helix performances in one week without leaving town.....you gotta love that!!
Even better, they would return to do it all again every 2 months or so and that is how we were fortunate to become friends of the band....thankyou Helix for bringing your rock n roll extravagonzo to Trenton so many times....we owe ya!
Fast forward to 2009, an amazing 33 years since I first saw them play and they are still rocking better than ever with another great album Vagabond Bones.
Rock n Roll will never die and we thank Helix for their incredible longevity !
keep Rockin Peace Out !!

The brand new CD Vagabond Bones is killer. There is not a bad song on it. The classic lineup is back and touring in Canada. Wish they would come close to my neck of the woods. This band is tight and the talent comes through full force on this CD. Give it a listen I found it on Planethelix.com and on itunes.
Helix is rocking in high gear with their new brand new CD Vagabond Bones. Founder Brian Vollmer is now rejoined with his 80's Helix mates: Brent Doerner on guitar, Fritz Heinz on drums and Daryl Grey on bass, the most successful cast of Helix musicians,
This classic lineup delivers the goods once again....great riffs, catchy lyrics and solid rythym.....it rocks !! Congrats Helix and thanks for giving us another fine collection of great Canadian rock. CHEERS !
