I always thought that the huge number of rotating drummers was a joke taken directly from Judas Priest.

Actually, that is not entirely correct. Although Harry Shearer spent time on the road with SAXON and used some of their experiences and mannerisms for the movie, SPINAL TAP is a mix of many groups, esp BLACK SABBATH, LED ZEP and URIAH HEEP. Remember, at the time of the movie, these UK groups were in decline, but SAXON was near the top of their popularity. The group was created for a skit on Rob Reiner's THE TV SHOW, the idea for the documentary style movie was taken from 1976's SO YOU WANT TO BE A ROCK N ROLL STAR and The Band's LAST WALTZ. Chris Guest said he got the idea of the charactors when he overheard a conversation between a frustrated tour manager and a dense bass player in a hotel lobby. Also, IMO Nigel is JEFF BECK!
