Where 80's Metal Fans Connect

Death of the live show.....

I think this may actually HELP Rocklahoma, but it doesn't bode well for metal fans who can't make the journey to sacred metal ground in Oklahoma each year. The attendance for the RATT/Poison shows across the country were released today and the results are not very good. I'm sure the Crue, Ozzy, and Metallica could draw more fans, but the days of the hair metal world tour might be over. It's a damn shame because our metal pretty much invented the world tour. Check the statistics…

Album O' The Week

True glam this week, as Warran't Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich is the call. I remember seeing the Down Boys video for the first time and thinking these guys could well be one of my favorite bands in the 80's. That quickly faded, but I still really like this record and the releases that came from it. Everyone remembers the big three--Heaven, Down Boys, Sometimes She Cries--but my favorite track on the record could be the excellent… Continue

Don't ask me which show

it was, but I saw something a few weeks back that put a spin on the 'ol "ozzy and the bat" story. I think it's been confirmed by pretty much everyone involved that Ozzy thought it was a rubber bat and bit into it unknowingly, but on this show (I'm sure it was VH-1 something or other) Sharon recounts how she gave Ozzy two doves to carry into a record executive meeting during the dark, workless days post-Sabbath and pre-excellent solo career. Ozzy was supposed to toss the doves in the air upon… Continue

Whether you love or hate Iron Maiden...

this is the greatest thing ever. Hardcore Maiden fans already know this, I'm sure, but I just found out that Bruce Dickinson is also a commercial airline pilot for a charter service in the UK. I linked the article below from the British newspaper a couple years back, and he seems like an interesting guy. But yeah -- how fucking cool would it be to charter a plane with Bruce Dickinson flying it, and insist that he not dress in his pilot clothes but instead full-on Maiden stage costume? How…

Which Song Rocked Harder.....Alice vs. Ozzy

Yep...You guessed it. Which one rocked harder: Alice from the Brady Bunch or Ozzy from Ozzy and Harriet. Ok, Ok....I know it's Ozzie and I know neither rocked so let's go Ozzy Osbourne vs. Alice Cooper. There, that's more like it! These guys earned their reps in the dark acid power chord blotted 70's, but carried their schlock into the 80's and made forrays into our metal. Ozzy was a stalwart and champion of our metal, while it seemed Alice just dipped in to let us all know he was still around.… Continue

Lyrical Challenge....

Lyrical Challenge, no further ado:

1. Caught a lonely lady,

crying on a cigarette.

2. And I can do you favors,

but then you'll do whatever I like.

3. Everything starts to spin

Loaded on Gin.

Ohhhh yeah. Three from the heart of our metal and the heart of the 80's. Answer quick folks, maybe we'll catch Ms. Landrum away from her computer!

My count so…

Let's Rediscover....

The Electric Boys. These guys formed in 1988 and fused a heavy funk sound with the foundation of our metal. It was a novel concept and produced some great songs on their debut release Funk O Metal Carpet Ride. The band enjoyed success in Europe (particularly England) but by the time they teamed with Mr. Big here in the states for a tour in the early 90's the band had fallen prey to lineup changes and the grunge movement. The song that you probably…

Obscure Metal Song Of The Week

Saturday....In the park....Naw, that's a good one by Chicago but it's definitely not our OMSOTW. This week's highlight song comes off of Use Your Illusion II, the second of a set of albums that I have not held back on as far as criticism over the years. These records signified to me that the end of the great sound that GNR brought on Appetite was over and they were moving towards Axl's vision of a prog rock punk band. Or...something like that I guess. I haven't been able to figure out what…

Whew!!

Tough one at the office today kept me from talking to you fine folks, but thank heavens it has slowed down now. I was seeing recently that Rob Zombie is doing a remake of an undeniable classic and one of my favorite all-time movies. I guess we'll get to see how bad Rob can screw up Halloween here in a couple of weeks. I shouldn't complain, they'll get my $6 at the gate. I also bought my Megadeth ticket for their show at the House of Blues in Myrtle Beach, SC. for the Oct. 5th show (at a pinch… Continue

Album O' The Week

time around here and with all the talk of Deviltry and Simmonsry I think a KISS record is a great choice. I coversated (is that a word?) with Slam and he concurs. Slam hates KISS. He hates Maiden, Megadeth, and Judas Priest too. Slam has been my friend for a long time, but he's like Andy Rooney. You hate his stances, tastes, and traits...but you love the guy. When you take into account he listens to the Scissor Sisters regularly, it makes his existence… Continue

As you're walking down

the road late one night (or staggering, I suppose) a black figure approaches you out of the mist. Being a child of metal and a member of MamasFallenAngels you of course aren't scared and realize this must simply be Lucifer. Yep, Mr. Scratch himself. He approaches, takes off his top hat (revealing perfectly shined red horns) and extends his hand in greeting. "Hello" he says in a thick Aussie accent (has anyone ever seen Dave and the Devil anywhere at the same time?...hmmm) "I'm the Devil. It's… Continue

Which Song Rocked Harder : Two from Bon Jovi

We're gonna slow it down once again for this version of WSRH and go to the high altar of rock ballads upon which Mr. Jovi sits. There were a couple of ballad producers during the eighties that could rival Bon Jovi (Def Lep, Whitesnake come to mind) but I guess extended periods of being exposed to New Jersey will teach a guy how to access his inner pain. Living In Sin is overlooked in their ballad department so we'll start with that one. It's… Continue

Lyrical Challenge

today, and a happy birthday to our leader A.R. I turn 34 in Jan. Alicia so hang in there. I really believe that our resident Aussie Daveo is a 98 year old Croc Dundee that would party and metal us all under the table if need be:)....Young at heart girl, young at heart. Birthday girl is in the lead here, so come strong guys:

1. Long nights leave me stranded,

Black visions, danger signs.

2. All alone in here,

But he's not the only…

Let's rediscover......

Europe. Evokes emotion on each side of the equation, this band does. You either hate them or like them. I used to hate them, but now I like them so I've seen both sides of the spectrum. Ok....where do I start with these guys. I guess we'll start (and mention in the middle and end with) the Final Countdown. We're destined to hear it at NBA games for the rest of the universe's existence, so we should know a little bit of history on the band behind it. Formed in Stockholm in the late seventies,…

Vince Neil

last night was better than the last couple of times I've seen him but still left the stage several times leaving his bandmates to jam alone. That's ok, they have more to offer as far as musical talent at this point than he does I think. As in Rocklahoma, his backup band was stellar. I didn't get to see him at the ABC store (Slam was right, except he didn't put an assistant there he just left) but I did get a signed bottle of his tequila. It may last a few days, seeing how I'm not much of a… Continue

cool review!

Hailing from Burnley (two minutes from where I live), David Readman is best known as the vocalist who replaced Andi Deris in Pink Cream 69. If life

was fair after the release of this, his first solo effort he would be

known as a huge star. Sadly I suspect that won’t happen because radio

and television here in the UK aren’t interested in a) rock music and b)

artists with real talent.…

Obscure Metal Song of the Week

In honor of my imminent trip to see Mr Neil in a few hours, it's appropriate that this OMSOTW come from Motley Crue. Shout at the devil is my all time favorite Motley Crue album, but this week the tune comes from the self titled album. Live Wire was the song I think all of us discovered when we truly wanted to start smoking, drinking, screwing, and pissing off our parents. I know it was for me. It (along with Master of Puppets) was one of the first songs that brought out the…

Against my better judgement

I just got some basement price seats to Vince Neil in Greensboro, NC Saturday night. In my experience with the Greensboro coliseum, cameras are not allowed so although I will not have photos, I will try to have some good commentary on the evening. For those that aren't familiar with this tour, Slaughter and Quiet Riot will be there in support of Vince, and from my last experiences with Motley/Vince, the guy needs all the help he can get. I wasn't really impressed with him when he played with… Continue

Album O' The Week : Orgasmatron by King Lemmy

On this AOTW, we're comin' heavy. This is by far Motorhead's heaviest record, and it's certainly one of their best. Even if the record wasn't good, it would make this weekly feature on the name alone. The two tracks I think of when I think of Motorhead are their two most famous ones (Ace of Spades and Eat the Rich) but Deaf Forever and Orgasmatron off of this record sums up what Lemmy is. In your face, heavy, hard driving, uncompromising, skull… Continue
