Where 80's Metal Fans Connect

Obscure Metal Song Of The Week.....

I'm going to go with Y&T on this one--glam style. The set at Rocklahoma was more for the fans of the early 80's music (which is very good, by the way) and for the most part the band stayed away from their foray into glam, 1988's Contagious. That's too bad, because this record flat rocks and is still in rotation on my MP3 player today. The first track released off Contagious was Contagious, and it peaked my interest in Y&T in a big way. This was… Continue

Well.....

The big Van Halen show finally happened and I was front and center. Actually I was upper level and to the left behind some amps some asshole strategically placed right between the band and I, but you get my drift. It was promising at the start. The band came out kicking and whirling to You Really Got Me, but it quickly digressed after that. By quickly I mean immediately. Dave was dressed in some kind of kung-fu lounge suit, and Wolfgang looked like..well....a sixteen year old kid playing…

Album O' The Week...

this week comes from AC/DC. The first record I bought from them as a matter of fact (I'm very proud to have contributed to their zillions of album sales over the years) and it remains one of their best in my opinion. Back In Black was the bounce back classic after Bon Scott, Who Made Who introduced them to millions of glamsters and put them back on the scene in the mid-late 80's, but Fly On The Wall was my overlooked classic. It was released in 1985, and I was introduced by my older brother…

I'm getting to bed

early tonight in anticipation for the world tour kickoff tomorrow night. As is the custom for most North Carolina indoor shows, there will probably be no cameras allowed, but I'll try to have a rundown with the setlist and will try to get as close as I can to catch the action. I'm real excited, and am looking forward to see if the VH meltdown that is inevitable will happen on the first night. Goodnight Angels!

Which Song Rocked Harder

Ok....you guys have hung tough with us these past months, and have voiced your praise, disgust, and apathy for our posts. I like Anthrax. Not like Metallica, or 'Deth, but they were important to the speed metal scene. They also dabbled in rap, lest we forgot. Or forgave. Or blocked from our memory like the time we got drunk and puked on our prom date. We're going to throw those two (and there were three, extra points to those who can name the third) rap songs that Anthrax famously participated… Continue

Lyrical Challenge.......

And away we go....

1. Found another way

to ruin and waste my health

2. See the ladies flashing

all their legs and lashes

3. Two lonely prisoners

of our own device

Toughies. Go get 'em.

Let's rediscover.....

Tora Tora. Attack Attack as it translates to the Queen's English. Inspired metal from this bunch, but theirs is not a name kicked around with Def Leppard and Motley Crue. They didn't have the following, but Tora Tora's brand of blues inspired rock and roll made believers out of those on the music scene in their native Memphis. And those folks see a rock and roll band from time to time. Surprise Attack was the one album that probably made it to your…

Obscure Metal Song Of The Week....

is one from Van Halen in honor of me going to the opener Wednesday night in Charlotte. Can't wait. Before I got 0U812 I heard Black and Blue. That was the first single released from the album, but quickly faded due to the other MASSIVE hits the record produced. I always liked it, and I think I still have the cassette single (remember those?) somewhere in my closet. I think that was one that survived Joe's raid on my collection in the late 80's. Good blues feel on this song, and it's a stark… Continue

MusiCares......

Came across an interesting bit of news in our metal world this afternoon, and I think it's definitely worth sharing. I've poked fun (and you have too, don't lie) about Ozzy and his legendary drugging and drinking. We've all seen his show, and sometimes you can really tell the effects of his lifestyle as he reaches later years. It's part of him, and I think he is pretty good at poking fun of it himself as well. I've heard the crazy stories, but I've never heard him talk publicly about why he… Continue

Album O' The Week....

time around here and we're going with an early one from Judas Priest. Screaming For Vengeance was the 8th studio album for Judas Priest and although they had a rabid following in England due to impressive live performances at the famous Reading festival and various local venues, they had yet to break big in the States. This record accomplished that. Released in the summer of 1982, the album took full advantage of the spawning cable channel MTV. If you… Continue

I'd be up for this....

Reports from jolly 'ol England have Led Zeppelin reuniting to play a gig for the re-opening of Ulster Hall in Belfast. The venue has some history--it's where Zep played Stairway to Heaven live the first time. Of course, with all of this talk always comes the possibility of a tour, and US dates have been kicked around. This is all speculation and rumor at this point, but one of the greates rock bands in history looks to be reuniting for at least one more show. Let's hope they have it in them to… Continue

Which Song Rocked Harder

And we'll go with our friends from Great White this Tuesday. I missed alot of this set at Rocklahoma standing in line for LA Guns autographs, and I hate that I did. Good band, good music. Lady Red Light off Once Bitten was a great rocker. I remember it was the second song on side two (yep, the cassette years) and it blasted out of my sony walkman on my frequent journeys through my neighborhood. I can attribute at least some of my current hearing loss… Continue

Let's Rediscover....

Lizzy Borden. Yep, Zodiac Mindwarp last week and Lizzie Borden this week. Just prepping for Halloween around here I guess. Lizzy Borden was formed in 1983 in the mold of Twisted Sister and Alice Cooper. Although they never had the true shock rock presence of those two acts, I always thought the music was pretty good, and they were just as talented musically as any band of the day. Joe Holmes (guitar) played with David Lee Roth and Ozzy Osborne, and…

Obscure Metal Song Of The Week

Comes from a band I think everyone likes : Cinderella. Long Cold Winter was a GREAT sophomore effort by them, something that didn't always happen in our metal. Night Songs was an instant classic, but Cinderella's changed into a more true bluesy vein with Long Cold Winter. My favorite is the bluesiest of the bluesy on that record, Bad Seamstress Blues. The best part is where the band kicks in from Tom doing the slide guitar into a full on rock and roll… Continue

Album O' The Week

Queensryche last night was very good. I went by myself, therefore had to drive, and therefore did not drink. It was the first time in a long time that I didn't have plentiful cold ones during a rock concert and I kind of liked it. Well, enough of my history of drunken revelry and on to the AOTW. Out Of The Cellar by RATT is the call and it couldn't have come at a better time. The band is getting flat out blasted in the media for the sloppiness of…

INFLUENCES ON A WEDNESDAY

G'day all,

Anyone into shock rock?...you know Alice, WASP, stuff like that...well I think I've found Alice Coopers logical successor....you guys probably know him already...but say howdy to Wednesday 13...I was just watching an interview and the bloke belongs on here with us...seriously he has some full blown hair metal influences...ALICE, DEE SNIDER, MOTLEY...anyway, i'll stick the interview on the video page along with a couple of tunes... and now to the question...who influenced…

Queensryche Tonight....

And I'm pretty stoked. I've seen them before, but always at a huge venue. I'm not sure about cameras and such yet (I'd bet we can't take 'em in) but I'll try to get some photos if I can. Either way, I'm going to get close enough to jam with the band baby. And discuss US foreign trade policy with Geoff Tate. Have a good day Angels!!

Which Song Rocked Harder....

Pretty somber day around this town for me. I usually don't go to memorials or gatherings but I hit one tonight with a client of mine and it was a very good reminder about what happened to this country six years ago. Tough day for alot of folks and it was pretty important for me to remember that. Def Lep rocks us into the middle of the week this time with two from Pyromania. I heard Rock Of Ages the other day and I was reminded how good that song is. "I want rock and roll!!!!....you betcha!"...A… Continue
