Which Song Rocked Harder.....

We hit on two old ones from Bon Jovi last week so I'm going to hit on two from old Def Leppard this week. Loved Pyromania. Loved Hysteria. Loved the whole Def Lep sound, stage presence, and anthems. On Through the Night is overlooked but we'll go with High and Dry. This was before the sing alongs (mostly) and has that down and out working class Brit drunk on cheap wine feel. That's a sound just as much as the… Continue

Lyrical Challenge

I'm sure we've all heard about Kevin, so this lyrical challenge will be done with a heavy heart. Stay with us this week, I thought we'd take a look back at Kevin's career with Quiet Riot. They were one of my favorite bands, and even though when I met Dubrow he wasn't very approachable, he's one of the reasons I loved and still love this music.

1. Hot as a pistol, loaded like a gun.

2. I like black and white, you like black and white.

3. Moan Lisa…

LOS ANGELES - Kevin DuBrow, lead singer of the popular 1980s heavy metal band Quiet Riot, has been found dead from unknown causes at his home in Las Vegas, authorities said on Monday. DuBrow, 52, was found dead at about 5:20 p.m. on Sunday, a spokeswoman for the Clark County Coroner’s Office said. She said an autopsy would be conducted to determine the…

I've been AWOL lately

with some stuff before I leave the great state of North Carolina for the frozen tundra of South Dakota, so I hope everyone had a great holiday and are starting out their entire holiday season right. Thanks to Alicia for the Krokus Rocklahoma update, we look forward to seeing them. I had a good time last night with my buddy's son. He's 13 months old and is starting to walk pretty good now. There was alot of people at the party (musical differences prevelant as always) and we were trying to…

Just a pretty random thought here....

but I relistened to The Great Radio Controversy last night by Tesla, and I think it might be one of my more overlooked albums of the eighties. Heaven's Trail was a great hard rock song. Lovesong of course is a killer ballad, and the other songs aren't that bad. Tesla is hard to hate. Good straightforward rock and roll all the time from those guys. I think we might feature it this week on…

Which Song Rocked Harder...

Early Bon Jovi for this melee...of which I was (and am) a huge fan. Slippery When Wet was the album that thrust these boys into the national spotlight, but my favorite album has always been 7800 Degrees Fahranheit. Tokyo Road vs. In And Out Of Love is our matchup, and it's a good one. In And Out Of Love has a permanent place in every MP3 I've ever owned (unfortunately I've lost thousands of those… Continue

Lyrical Challenge.....

1. Bound to lose your mind, live on borrowed time.

2. I don't mind, if living this way is right.

3. Fire blasting, cutting edge.

A little bit a Lita

Today for our Obscure Metal Song of the Week. "Went to a party last Saturday night, didn't get laid...." Story of my life, Ms. Ford. This came off her Lita album, which threw Lita Ford into the metal spotlight, and every teenage male's imagination (including mine), in the year of our metal 1988. Lita, who had been in the game for awhile at this point (Runaways) was never given the props she deserved because of her sexpot image. It's a… Continue

A little help....

I know, at some point between 1986 and 1989, I had in my posession a Great White EP that had a remaster of some of the older stuff (Face the Day, I think?) and a cover of some Zeppelin songs (Rock and Roll, Immigrant song...those I'm sure of) and I can't find it anywhere. Not on their Wiki page, not on the band's website, not anywhere. If I remember, the cover had Mark Kendall poised over Jack Russell while Russell was on a hospital gurney. Kendall was either holding a guitar or a drill....I…

Album O' The Week...

First time for us here Angels. We're going to do a live greatest hits, and THE live album from my youth...World Wide Live from the Scorps gets my vote. I'm going to start this AOTW by saying if you don't stop by and see us and hear Joe Saytch do his Klaus imitation from this record while you are at Rocklahoma next year, you are doing yourself a GRAVE injustice. It's funny, and dead on. We might sell tickets. MFA members free of course.… Continue

We've gotten a little off track

with our Wednesday feature of new bands, so without further interruption we'll get everyone familiar with Rhino Bucket, who have been closely compared to AC/DC in sound, but are one of the few "new" bands that have found success in the eighties, nineties, and today with a great blues-rock formula. Formed in 1987 they released their first album, Rhino Bucket, in 1990. They had some success in the early nineties with Get Used To It, which led them to…

Slam's Supermarket Song of the Day

I wonder if they EVER sell any of their guitar strings or drum sticks at my supermarket? I mean -- usually if someone breaks a string, they go to a music store...right? I don't play guitar, but I think tomorrow I may buy some guitar strings at my grocery store, on general principle alone.

Today's songs were 2 excellent ones -- Motley's Home Sweet Home and The Price by Twisted Sister. Flat Iron steaks were $4.99 a pound.

Which Song Rocked Harder

I might get complaints on this one, but we're going to do it. Winger vs. Night Ranger. Yep, battle of the bands whose songs your little sister liked. Hell, maybe even your mom liked. We're talking these two ballad busters, so we're talking Headed for a Heartbreak and Sister Christian. One was a slow grooving rocker (great vocals by Kip on this one, and that's sincere) and one was a piano driven melodic...umm...I just re-read the lyrics on this one and I can't tell if messrs Night Ranger are… Continue

Let's Rediscover.....

Jetboy. These guys have been rumored to be hitting the bill in Rocklahoma, so anyone who is making their way to the metal mecca next year might need to catch up with them. We're here to help. Jetboy was formed in the mid 1980's and took on the persona and musical style closely linked to Hanoi Rocks and some of the punk influenced glamsters invading the L.A. music scene. In researching these guys and reading the bios, they went through more label…

After a night of several doses of the creature, like my night last night, I've found that 27 cups of the strongest coffee in the world and a 2 and 1/2 hour blazing hot shower can really help. If you want sappy advice on how to open up to your spouse, go check Ann Landers. If you want advice on how to kill a… Continue

Blind....In North Carolina

Tonight the office is having the offical "Big Robbo is getting the hell out of here" party since I've officially found more gainful employment with another firm. My boss, a heavyweight drinker in his own right, has been so kind as to buy my drinks tonight at the local Applebees. I've been listening to Blind In Texas--a rugged drinking song to be sure--to hype myself for the event of putting MAJOR dents in the 'ol boss' credit card. If I don't post by 9pm tomorrow fellow Angels, call the Winston… Continue

Slam's Supermarket Song of the Day

They went way back to the hair metal roots today -- the first song I heard was KISS Detroit Rock City, with a little bit of a Van Halen and Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love chaser.

I'm going to tell you guys something that I discovered at my grocery store yesterday (and I'm shocked that I had never seen it before), and I fully expected you NOT to believe me. I promise you that I am telling the truth, and when I get the chance (next time I remember to bring my camera to the store) I am going to… Continue

Album O' The Week...

Goes to Ozzy this week in honor of our members Joe and Crazy From The Heat taking in Ozzy Tuesday night in South Dakota. Good show, from their verbal reports (where's the print boys?) and I of course am jealous because I've never seem him. I had an invite, but I have to head to that frozen tundra later this month and it just wouldn't work out. A little vodka, a few pills, and some formaldahyde and I'm sure Ozzy will be right back at it, so hopefully… Continue

I'm sitting here rocking to my

Maiden shuffle list, and I wonder if we'll ever see the kick ass solos come back. Even in the music of the sixties and seventies it was prevelant, but something happened along the way. I was in a bookstore the other day and passed a magazine and the cover said something like "The New Guitar Gods"...and John Mayer was on there (I can't remember the other two) and it made me chuckle. Now, when I say stupid shit like this I realize that John Mayer could play me under the table eight days a week,… Continue
